Quick Start

These instructions are designed to help you get started with Exchange quickly, whether you are an administrator or an end user.

Setting up an Exchange server

  1. Server installation: Install Exchange Server on a dedicated server within your organisation. Ensure that your server meets the minimum requirements for Exchange.
  2. Server configuration: Configure basic settings such as the domain, storage groups and database paths.
  3. Licensing: Activate your Exchange installation with a valid licence key.

Users and mailboxes

  1. Creating user accounts: Create user accounts in your Exchange organisation.
  2. Assigning mailboxes: Assign a mailbox to each user. This can be done whilst creating the user or at a later stage.
  3. Distribution groups: Create distribution groups to facilitate communication within Teams or between departments.

Client configuration

  1. Outlook Setup: Set up Microsoft Outlook for end users to enable access to email, calendars and contacts.
  2. Mobile devices: Configure Exchange ActiveSync for synchronisation with smartphones and tablets.
  3. Outlook Web Access (OWA): Inform users about how to access their mailbox via a web browser.

Safety and Maintenance

  1. Antivirus and anti-spam: Implement antivirus and anti-spam solutions to protect your mailboxes.
  2. Backup and recovery: Set up regular backups for Exchange data and plan strategies for disaster recovery.
  3. Monitoring: Regularly monitor the performance and health of your Exchange server.

Advanced features

  1. Public folders: Use public folders to share information within the organisation.
  2. Rules and policies: Configure transport rules to control the flow of email and enforce organisational policies.
  3. Setting up Connectors: If required, set up the relevant connectors to control the flow of email between Exchange and other systems.
