Mozilla Thunderbird

This article explains, step by step, how to set up your email account in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Required information

  • Email account; in our example, we are using hallo@centronhosting.de
  • Password for the email account
  • Incoming and outgoing mail servers
  • Mail server ports; you can find these in the instructions

Step 1

When you launch Thunderbird, the Account Wizard opens automatically. If this does not happen, you can also launch the wizard under ‘Set up an account’ by clicking on ‘Email’.

Step 2

Start by entering your name, email address and password. Then click on ‘Advanced settings’. Select ‘IMAP’ and enter your incoming and outgoing mail servers.

You will receive the name of your new server by email. It is usually different from the mail server shown in the screenshots.

Next, enter your port numbers and select ‘SSL/TLS’ for the incoming mail server and ‘STARTTLS’ for the outgoing mail server. The authentication method for both servers is ‘Password, normal’. For ‘Username’, enter your full email address.

Encrypted server ports:

ProtocolPortEncryption type
IMAP993SSL/TLS
POP995SSL/TLS
SMTP465SSL/TLS
587STARTTLS

Then click on ‘Test again’. Thunderbird will now check your settings. If there are any errors, please check your entries again. Complete the setup by clicking on ‘Done’.

Step 3

Your account has now been successfully linked.
