Monitoring performance

To view the graphs for a ccloud³ VM, simply click on its name in the dashboard. You will be taken directly to the graphs page. By default, three graphs are available for each ccloud³ VM:

  1. Traffic usage (Public): This graph shows public bandwidth usage in megabits per second.
  2. CPU usage: This shows the percentage of total processing power being used. User activities are shown in light blue and system processes in dark blue.
  3. Hard Disk I/O: This graph shows hard disk read and write operations in megabytes per second.
  4. Memory Usage: Displays the percentage of physical RAM in use.

The times shown in these graphs correspond to your local time zone, as determined by your browser.

If you have enabled the private network on the ccloud³ VM, you will have access to a fourth graph for monitoring bandwidth usage within the VPC network. As with the public bandwidth graph, the private bandwidth graph will only appear once there is actual network traffic.

Advanced Monitoring

The standard graphs in the ccloud³ VM use metrics collected by external tools; no additional services are required on the ccloud³ VM itself. You can enable additional metrics graphs and alerting functions using the centron Metrics Agent, a small utility that runs on the ccloud³ VM.

You can install the Metrics Agent automatically when deploying a ccloud³ VM or after it has been created.

Once the agent has been installed, you will have access to these additional graphs, amongst others:

  • Load Average: Measures whether the CPU is keeping up with the queued processes. There are three lines showing the 1-, 5- and 15-minute load averages in blue, green and purple.
  • Disk usage: Displays the percentage of disk space in use on the ccloud³ VM’s hard disk.

The time frame options for the ccloud³ VM graphs are 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or 1 year. The data resolution is based on the number of data points, with a fixed number of points used per plot. When you hover your mouse over one of the graphs, a line appears on all graphs, marking a specific point in time. Along with a legend for the graph, metrics for that specific point in time are displayed.
