VPN
A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that enables a secure connection over a public network (such as the internet) or a private network.
PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)
An older VPN protocol, known for being easy to set up, but less secure than newer protocols.
L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with Internet Protocol Security)
Combines L2TP, which encrypts data, with IPsec to provide a secure connection.
OpenVPN
A versatile, open-source VPN protocol that offers security and speed, and is frequently used for secure connections.
IKEv2/IPsec (Internet Key Exchange version 2 with IPsec)
Known for its speed and stability, particularly during frequent network switches, such as between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
Remote Access VPN
Enables individual users to access a private network securely from a remote location.
Site-to-Site VPN
Connects two of a company’s sites via a VPN, ideal for linking branch offices.
Mobile VPN
Provides mobile devices with a stable connection that is not interrupted when switching networks.
Use cases
Data security: Protects data sent over unsecure networks, such as public Wi-Fi.
Location anonymity
Users can hide their IP address and thus anonymise their location data.
Bypassing geo-blocking
Allows access to content that is restricted in certain geographical regions.
Encryption
VPNs encrypt data to protect it from unauthorised access whilst it is being transmitted over the internet.
Kill Switch
A feature that cuts off internet access if the VPN connection is lost, to prevent data leaks.
VPN service providers
Companies that offer VPN services to private individuals and businesses, often with a range of pricing plans and features.
Enterprise VPN
A VPN designed specifically for organisations, which often offers advanced security and management features.
VPN client software
A software application that is installed on a device to establish a connection to a VPN server.
VPN server
A server on which VPN services are running acts as a gateway to the internet or to a private network.
Data privacy concerns
Whilst VPNs enhance privacy, data security depends on the trustworthiness of the VPN provider.
