A glossary of key technical terms relating to centron’s cloud environment, ccloud³ VMs, images, networks and virtualisation.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

DHCP is a network management protocol that enables the automatic allocation of IP addresses within a network. In centron’s cloud environment, DHCP supports dynamic IP allocation for ccloud³ VMs.

Disk Image

Disk images are software copies of physical storage media. They store the data from a physical storage medium (e.g. a hard disk) in one or more files. This technology is used in centron’s cloud services to manage VM images efficiently.

ISO image

An ISO image, or ISO file, is an exact copy of an optical disc stored in a single file. On centron, ISO images can be used to create and manage ccloud³ VMs.

qcow2

qcow2 is a file format for disk images. It is particularly useful in cloud environments such as centron’s, as it supports features such as snapshots and compression.

Tag

Tags are keywords associated with resources to facilitate the management and organisation of resources in cloud environments. In centron, tags can be used to organise and manage ccloud³ VMs and centron S3 Object Storage.

VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)

A VDI is a desktop virtualisation system that hosts desktop environments on a centralised server. centron’s cloud services can be used for VDI solutions to provide centralised, scalable desktop environments.

VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk)

A VMDK file is a virtual file format for virtual hard disk containers. This format can be used in centron’s CloudStack environment for managing VM disks.
