Enable high availability

A high-availability control plane replicates the central control plane components, thereby providing a built-in failover mechanism. It eliminates the single point of failure in the control plane.

Availability

centron Managed Kubernetes comes with a guaranteed availability of 99.9%. Replication additionally reduces the technical risk of control plane failure – the Managed Kubernetes service specification applies.

Warnung

Once a high-availability control plane has been added, it cannot be removed from the cluster. Once activated, a monthly charge will apply to this cluster on an ongoing basis – see the Kubernetes price overview.

Prerequisites

  • An existing cluster or permission to create a new one
  • Permission to change cluster settings in the relevant project

Enable when creating a cluster

  1. Create a new cluster; see Create a cluster.

  2. In the creation dialogue, scroll down to the section Maximise uptime for critical workloads.

  3. Tick the Add high availability option.

The monthly price shown is added to the summary under Summary. The line HA Control Plane also appears there, showing the guaranteed SLA.

  4. Check the updated Monthly Total and complete the process by clicking Create & Buy now.

Activate retrospectively

You can also add high availability to a cluster that is already running:

  1. Open the cluster in the Kubernetes overview.
  2. Switch to the Overview tab.
  3. The Control Plane section displays the current status – with the High availability disabled option deactivated.
  4. Enable the high-availability control plane there and confirm that you accept the costs.

Following the migration, the Control Plane section displays the status High availability enabled.

Check status

You can view the current status at any time in the Overview tab under Control Plane:

DisplayMeaning
High availability enabledThe control plane components are replicated.
High availability disabledThe control plane is running as a single instance.

Notes

  • High Availability applies exclusively to the control plane. You determine the reliability of your applications via their own configuration – see HighAvailability.
  • For test and development clusters, the standard control plane is generally sufficient.
  • Billing is calculated on an hourly basis from the time of activation.
