Creating and setting up a disk
Find out, step by step, how to create, configure and format disks (volumes) in centron and ccloud³, and how to mount them in virtual machines.
Creating discs
To create a volume via the centron Control Panel, open the creation menu and select ‘Volumes’. In the ‘Add block storage’ section of the ccloud³ VM creation page, you can also create and attach a new volume whilst creating a new ccloud³ VM.
Select disc size
In the ‘Select volume size’ section, choose the size of the volume, either by selecting a preset size or by entering a size in gigabytes.
Select the ccloud³ VM and name the volume
In the next section, select the ccloud³ VM to which you wish to attach the volume, and enter a name for the volume. Disks are located in the same data centre and project as their associated ccloud³ VMs.
Select configuration options
In this section, you can choose how you wish to format and mount the new volume.
Automatic Formatting & Embedding
If you format and mount a volume automatically, you will also need to select a file system (ext4 is selected by default). You can also choose XFS, which is designed to deliver high performance when handling large data files.
Manual Formatting & Embedding
If you choose to format and mount your volume manually, you can follow the VM-specific instructions under the 'More' menu item in the volume's configuration instructions.
Create a disc
Once you have selected all the necessary settings, click on ‘Create volume’ to create the volume. As soon as the volume has been formatted and mounted, it is ready for use.
Adding, moving or deleting files
Once the volume has been mounted, it will be accessible on your ccloud³ VM at "/mnt/your-volume-name". You can use this path to carry out all the file operations you would normally perform on a native volume, including creating, moving or deleting files.
