Use cases

Disks are particularly useful if you need more storage space but do not require the additional processing power or memory that a larger ccloud³ VM would provide, such as:

  • As the document root or directory for media uploads on a web server.

  • For storing database files for a database server.

  • As a destination for backups.

  • As additional storage for personal file-hosting platforms such as ownCloud.

  • As a storage solution for specific distributed web applications and workflows in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

User-friendliness

Disks function as generic block devices, so you can treat attached disks in the same way as locally connected storage drives. This allows you to partition, format and manage disks using familiar tools and techniques.

You can choose whether to format and mount a volume for use for the first time on Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian 8+, CentOS and Fedora Atomic.

Flexibility

Disks are independent resources, so you can move them between ccloud³ VMs within the same data centre, and you can increase the size of a disk without shutting down the associated ccloud³ VM.

Volume snapshots are complete disk images that you can create on demand. Create a snapshot to save the contents of the disk, and create disks based on snapshots to create a new volume with the same contents.

Please note: Backing up and restoring volumes and snapshots is not included in the service. You are solely responsible for planning, implementing and reviewing your backup strategy.

Performance

Like ccloud³ VMs, Disks are based on NVMe storage. The NVMe-based architecture delivers high performance and low latency for demanding workloads.

Disks also support burst performance. Burst performance automatically increases the disks’ IOPS and bandwidth rates for short periods (60 seconds) before returning to baseline performance, in order to cope with peaks in workload.
