An overview of key terms relating to Webhosting, servers, domains and IT infrastructure – clearly explained in the glossary.
Webhosting
The service that provides storage space, access and maintenance for websites on a server.
Server
High-performance computer hardware used to store websites and their data and make them accessible.
Domain
The unique name that identifies a website on the internet (e.g. www.beispiel.de).
CMS (Content Management System)
Software that makes it easier to create and manage digital content, usually for websites.
SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer)
A technology used to encrypt information exchanged between web servers and browsers.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
A standard network protocol used to transfer files between a client and a server on the Internet.
Shared Hosting
A Webhosting where several websites share the same server.
VPS (Virtual Private Server)
A hosting option similar to a dedicated server on a smaller scale, with its own copy of the operating system and allocated server resources.
Dedicated server
A server used exclusively by a single organisation or website.
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transmitted via a website’s network within a given period.
